2015 ADK Winter Mountaineering School scheduled from Jan. 27-Feb. 2
(Posted: 2014-10-31)
The Adirondack Mountain Club has sponsored the Winter Mountaineering School for over 60 years. Its purpose is to promote
and teach safe winter mountaineering and camping techniques. The school is staffed by experienced all-volunteer instructors
who, each year, plan and execute the program designed around experiential learning allowing students to spend the majority
of their school time learning, practicing, and applying skills necessary to safely climb and camp in a variety of winter conditions.
An important objective of the program is to provide ADK chapter members with the skills needed to lead their own chapter hikes
and backpacking trips during the winter. If a sufficient number of ADK chapter leaders register for this year's program to either
gain or enhance their winter leadership skills I will design a curriculum specific for their needs.
The 2015 program, as in past years, will be based out of the Adirondack Loj. Events are scheduled to start at 9AM Thursday
January 29th and run until either through Sunday February 1st or February 5th, depending on the program selected. The costs
for the various program options represent a great value when compared to equivalent outdoor education programs offered by
similar organizations, and students rate their instructors and satisfaction with their experience at the School very highly
year after year.
A
Flyer and Advertisement
provides a brief overview of this year's course offerings, and guides interested students to the
school website -- www.winterschool.org -- where they can find relevant information about the program, on-line registration
through the ADK reservation system, gear lists, comprehensive student handbook, and other important details and documents.
We also have a
Facebook page where we post updates
and current program information. The deadline for applications is January 16, 2015. However, the various section programs
in the past reach their capacity by early January and we end up having to turn away a number of prospective students, so I
would encourage chapter members interested in attending to apply as early as possible.
The deadline for registration is Jan. 15! For more information and downloadable
application forms go to
www.winterschool.org
or call 523-3441.
